Backgammon is a game that combines skill with chance. In order to be successful at the game of backgammon it is important to be aware of which move will increase your chances of winning the most. Players need to have a game plan and be able to react to their opponent’s game plan for the best chance at winning. Following some basic backgammon tips will help your chances of winning.

Keep Checkers off the Low Points

From the beginning of the game you should try to keep your checkers off the low points, especially points 1 and 2. This will prevent you from restricting your options for later in the game.

The Doubling Cube

The doubling cube can be used as a weapon against your opponent. If you using the doubling cube does not result in some stress for your opponent, you may be using it too early. It is to your advantage to own the doubling cube as it will prevent your opponent from being able to redouble. Remember that you are able to redouble straight after your opponent has doubled. If you are about to lose the match, it is a good idea to double if you can. In general, you should accept a double if your chances of winning are at least 25%.

Bearing off Formation

You should aim for a downward slope formation when you are bearing off the board. In other words, aim for an uneven distribution of checkers to give you more options. This backgammon tip says to aim for the largest stack on point 6, sloping down to points 3 or 4. This will mean that you will not have to use your higher rolls to bear off from lower points towards the end of the game.

Hitting

It may not be wise to hit early in the game as it may result in an opponent who is out for revenge. On the other hand, later in the game, especially if your home board is full without any unprotected checkers, hitting may give you the break that you need. Just be careful not to leave unprotected checkers as you do not want to be hit late in the game when your opponent moves his checker back onto the board. On the other hand, if you are not sure what move to make and you have the opportunity to hit, this may be a good choice, especially if you are on your opponent’s side of the board.

Avoid Abandoning Anchors

It is usually not a good idea to abandon your anchors when you are behind in a backgammon game. If you are patient, a worthwhile shot is likely to come along and this may give you your only chance of winning.

Race

If you are clearly ahead in the game, a good backgammon tip is to race ahead as much as possible. Remember, the first player to remove all of his checkers from the board wins so if your pieces are safe, focus on speed to the finish.
